Special design gifts for the home, or: what do you buy for someone who already has everything?
Some people are easy to buy a gift for. They send a link, say exactly what they need, or at least drop hints that are clear enough. And then there are the others. The ones who already have everything, who do not want another random thing, or who say, in the most alarming politeness: “really, there is no need to bring anything”.
They are the ones I most like looking for gifts for.
Not because it is easy to find them something, but because the search forces us to think about the person. What does their house look like? What do they like to sit beside in the evening? Do they light candles, arrange flowers, host a lot, read in bed, or always drink coffee in the same chair? Sometimes those small facts tell us more than a tidy gift list.
To me, a good gift for the house does not have to be large or especially impressive. It should feel as if someone really stopped, looked, and chose.
Why do we give gifts at all?
Anthropologists have been interested in gifts for years, and not by chance. A gift is never only an object passing from hand to hand. It is a way to make a tie, strengthen a relationship, say thank you, mark a new beginning, or show someone we thought of them.
