Why do people light so many candles in Denmark?

The simple explanation starts, of course, with climate. In the winter months the sun sets early, and life turns inward. But weather alone does not explain the central place of candles in Danish home culture.

The Danish anthropologist Mikkel Bille studied the use of light in homes in Copenhagen. He showed that lighting is not used only so people can see. It helps them make a particular feeling of home, intimacy, calm, and safety. In his research on the Islands Brygge neighbourhood in Copenhagen he describes how lights and candles seen through windows also make a sense of community: the knowledge that other people are in their houses, awake and living behind the glass.

According to the research, candle use in Denmark rises sharply in winter. A later medical study found that more than 60 percent of the Danes who took part said they light candles at home more than twice a week in the winter months.

But the Danish idea of hygge is not simply another name for a candle, a blanket, and a cup of tea. Hygge is a social state. It has to do with intimacy, calm, informality, and the feeling that the outside world can be set aside for a while. The candle does not make all of this by itself, but it helps mark the shift. When the main light goes off and the candles go on, the way people behave in the room can change too.

What is a Danish candle holder?

Not every candle holder that looks minimal is Danish, and not every holder made in Denmark looks simple or restrained. In Danish design you find holders in heavy brass, silver, steel, iron, glass, and ceramic. Some are geometric and exact; others are organic, sculptural, even playful.

Still, Danish design often returns to a link between usefulness and material presence. The holder should keep the candle steady, but it can also be a small sculpture. It should live in everyday life, but there is no reason it should disappear into it.

One of the beautiful things about vintage candle holders from Denmark is that they were not necessarily meant for a special occasion. Candles are not saved only for a holiday, a festive meal, or a romantic evening. A holder can stand on the kitchen table and be lit at an ordinary midweek dinner. An object that could have been seen as ceremonial becomes part of the everyday.

Why choose a vintage candle holder?

A vintage candle holder has already carried candles before it reached us. Sometimes you can see this in small wax drips, in the tone the metal has taken on, or in the quiet marks that years have left. To me those marks are not necessarily a flaw. They remind you the object was not made only to be photographed, but to take part in life.

Vintage holders let you bring home an object you will not find in thousands of other houses. Some were designed by a known designer or maker; some are entirely anonymous. A famous name can be interesting, but it is not the only condition for a good object. Sometimes a small, unsigned holder is exactly the piece that holds a whole table.

Choosing vintage also lets existing objects go on living. Instead of making another new version of something that already exists in the world, you can choose a piece that has already survived decades and still does its job.

How do you choose a candle holder that fits the house?

Before you choose a holder, it helps to think not only about its form but about the place and the way you want to use it.

Ask yourselves:

• Is it meant for the dining table, a shelf, a chest, or the windowsill?
• Do you want to light it every evening, or mainly on special occasions?
• Are you looking for one holder with presence, or a group of several?
• Does it need to be beautiful even without a candle?
• What kind and thickness of candle fits it?
• Is it stable enough for the place it will stand?
• Do you like bright metal, or do you prefer patina and marks of time?
• Do you want it to settle into the room, or become a focus that draws the eye?

It is worth checking the holder's measurements and not relying only on a photograph. A holder shot up close can look large and monumental, even when in life it is small and fine. Check the height, the width of the base, and the diameter of the opening meant for the candle.

How do you set a table with candle holders?

The simplest way to set a table is to start with one holder or a pair. But you do not have to buy two identical ones. A mix of heights, materials, or periods can make a more interesting, more personal table.

On a long rectangular table you can spread three or five holders along the centre, so the light follows the table instead of gathering in one spot. On a round table you can make a small group in the middle. If the table is for a meal, the holders should not block the line of sight between people sitting opposite each other.

You can pair a tall brass holder with a low glass one, or make a group of the same material in different shapes. The link between them does not have to be a perfect match. It is enough that they share something: a tone, a period, a material, a form, or a feeling.

Leave a little empty space too. The holders need room to breathe, and the flame needs a safe distance from other objects, flowers, napkins, and textile.

Do candle holders have to come in pairs?

No. The tradition of a pair is very strong, especially around a Shabbat table, but in design there is no need for symmetry.

One holder can stand as a sculptural object on a chest or beside a stack of books. Three at different heights make a dynamic composition. Two that are not identical can still look related if they share a proportion, a material, or a colour.

The question is not whether they match, but whether they are in conversation with each other.

If you already have one holder you love, you can bring it with you or photograph it and look for another that completes it. Sometimes the result is more interesting than a pair that was made as a pair.

Can vintage candle holders be used for Shabbat?

Yes, as long as the holder fits the candle, stands steadily, and can be used safely. Anyone looking for special Shabbat holders does not have to choose a classic silver pair or two identical pieces. You can make a pair from two similar vintage holders, or choose holders that are related without being copies of each other.

There is something especially beautiful about putting an object from Denmark inside a Jewish ritual that takes place in Israel. The object gets a new context, but it goes on doing what it has always done: holding light and marking that time has changed.

Before you buy, check that the opening fits the candles you use, that the base is wide and stable, and that wax can be removed easily. If the table is busy and children are around it, it is better to avoid tall or light holders that could tip over.

Brass candle holders: polish them, or keep the patina?

Brass changes with time. It can darken, take on spots, and develop a deeper tone. That layer is called patina, and it is part of how a material ages.

There is no single answer to whether a brass holder should be polished. A bright one throws candlelight back more strongly and festively. A holder with patina feels quieter, deeper, and sometimes older. It is an aesthetic choice, not a test of cleanliness.

Before you clean a vintage holder, it matters to know what it is made of. A piece that looks like brass may only be plated, and aggressive cleaning can take the plating off and cause damage that cannot be undone. Always start with a soft, dry cloth. If more cleaning is needed, try a hidden spot first and avoid abrasives.

Here too, not every mark has to go. Sometimes the attempt to make an old object look new erases exactly what made it interesting.

Which material is right for you?

The right material is not necessarily the one that already appears throughout the house. Sometimes a new material is what makes the layer of depth the room was missing.

Where can you put candle holders in the house?

The dining table is the obvious place, but candle holders can change almost any part of the house.

You can put one on a chest by the entrance and light it when guests arrive. You can set a small group on the living-room table, as long as it is away from books, fabrics, and busy paths. A holder on the windowsill makes a link between the house and the street, a habit that takes on a special meaning in dark Scandinavian cities. In the bedroom you can use a holder as a decorative object, but light a candle only when you stay awake and present in the room.

Holders do not have to be lit to earn their place. You can treat them as small sculptures that now and then receive another layer of light and movement.

How do you use candles at home safely?

Open flame needs attention. Put the holder on a flat, stable surface, away from curtains, plants, books, tablecloths, and anything that can catch fire. Do not leave candles unattended, and keep them away from children and animals.

It is also worth knowing that burning candles give off particles and affect the air in the house. The Danish consumer organisation Tænk recommends lighting fewer candles at once, avoiding scented ones, trimming a long wick, not placing a candle in a draught, and airing the room well afterwards. When you want the visual effect without fire and smoke, good LED candles can work too, especially in a child's room or a house with pets.

The Danish tradition teaches us to use light to make atmosphere. It does not require lighting dozens of candles every evening.

Do all the candle holders in the house have to match?

A house built over time is almost never made of one set. A holder that has passed through the family can stand beside one found at a flea market in Copenhagen, a new glass vessel, and a book you bought yesterday. That mix is what makes the house personal.

Instead of looking for a full match, you can choose one principle that ties the objects together. For example:

• Several holders in different tones of the same metal
• Different shapes at a similar height
• Holders of the same material from different periods
• One central holder with quieter pieces beside it
• A vintage holder with a vase or bowl from the same family of colours

The aim is not to make every object say the same thing. An interesting house is made when they are different, but still know how to live together.
