In 1961, Danish toy designer and sculptor Gunnar Flørning decided to expand his wooden menagerie. This time, he chose one of the world's most beloved and intelligent animals—the elephant. Renowned for his ability to transform raw blocks of wood into deeply expressive figures, Flørning designed a small baby elephant with rounded lines, wide ears, and a raised trunk, radiating a sense of joy and innocence. The Baby Elephant quickly became one of Flørning’s most successful creations of the 1960s, thanks to his flourishing partnership with the influential distributor Laurids Lønborg. The original design was born in dark teak wood, the definitive material of the Golden Age of Danish design. The small figurine captured hearts and became a symbol of warmth and nostalgia in homes across Scandinavia and beyond. After decades where the original elephant could only be found at vintage markets and high-end auctions, the Danish design company Lucie Kaas breathed new life into it. Working closely with Flørning’s family, the company brought this 1960s icon back to the modern production line, meticulously preserving the designer's original proportions and contours. The version in your hands offers a sophisticated, contemporary interpretation of this classic: the teak wood of the last century has been replaced with smoked oak. The smoking process grants the wood a deep, dark, and rich tone. This finish retains the luxurious, warm appearance of the original 1960s teak items while embracing the modern, sustainable, and elegant spirit of contemporary Scandinavian design. It stands as a timeless artistic piece that perfectly bridges design history with modern aesthetics.
