Gunnar Flørning's pelican is one of the iconic symbols of Danish Mid-Century design. It was born from Flørning's visit to the Copenhagen Zoo with his daughter, who was fascinated by the pelicans in the pond. A few days later, the daughter carved the first sketch, and Flørning continued from there to create a figurine that became a global icon. The figure was created as part of the wooden animal series by manufacturer Laurids Lønborg, and was later reissued by Lucie Kaas as part of the revival of Flørning's classic works. Flørning (1906–1982), a Danish carpenter and craftsman, was known for his direct work with blocks of wood, without preliminary sketches – a process that allowed him to "listen" to the material and let the form develop from within. Thus were born his rounded and lively figurines, characterized by warmth, humor, and natural simplicity. The pelican is made from solid beech wood with a two-tone finish – a natural wood body and a hand-painted black beak. The beak moves on a hinge and opens with a soft movement, giving the figure a changing and delicate expression. This is an item that embodies the spirit of classic Danish design – natural use of material, clean lines, and a sense of simple and authentic life.
