The Fritz Hansen Kaiser Idell is a red metal ceiling pendant from the 1960s. The round body and the colour sit on a Bauhaus line: the form directs the light, and the lamp stays an object you can live with over a dining table. It was made in Denmark. Fritz Hansen had been making furniture and lighting since the late 19th century, working with designers who shaped Danish design. The Kaiser Idell series keeps that line: lighting that works at home, with a silhouette you can recognise from across the room. The designer is not signed on this lamp in a definitive way. It is attributed to Christian Dell, who worked within the Bauhaus and built metal lights in which shade, light, and daily use sit together. In the 1960s, modern homes looked for an object that could enter a room and still remain present. This pendant does that: it gives light over the table, and the red stays in the room when it is switched off.
