A rare and fascinating collector's piece: an antique brass-and-wood box iron, once used for pressing clothes and today a bold design statement. This iron—sometimes called a "round beak" or "butter knotted" iron in different regions—carries the aura of classic European craftsmanship. Box irons of this type, attributed to Scandinavia and Denmark, are precisely dated to 1848 as engraved on the base—mid-19th century, when ironing was complex and required inventive solutions. Instead of electricity or direct heating, the iron was used by lifting a small arched hatch at the back and inserting a hot metal "slug" to keep the base warm. It showcases the evolution of everyday tools and the practical human engineering of the era. The piece combines natural materials and warm metal: a massive, heavy brass base with deep patina. The handle is supported by two twisted brass columns, giving it a sculptural, ornate presence. Vintage engravings on the base (likely ownership marks, including the 1848 date) add history and personality. Perfect for collectors or as a design sculpture on a shelf, desk, or in a display case—linking historic practicality with aesthetics. Very heavy. Condition: antique, excellent collector condition with patina and engravings (1848).
